A Royal Romance: The Complicated Love Story of Diana and Charles

In 1977, a young Diana Spencer crossed paths with the then 29-year-old Prince Charles, marking the beginning of a tumultuous relationship that would captivate the world.

At just 16, Diana was introduced to Charles at her family’s estate, Althorp, during a grouse shooting party.

This meeting was orchestrated by her older sister, Lady Sarah McCorkadale, who had her own brief interaction with the prince.

In a candid moment, Sarah shared her thoughts with two reporters, revealing her struggles with an eating disorder and a string of boyfriends.

She boldly declared that she wouldn’t marry Charles, even if he were a dustman or the King of England.

This revelation didn’t sit well with Charles, who reportedly chastised Sarah for her remarks after reading the article.

Diana’s initial experience with Charles was far from the fairy tale many might imagine.

Unlike her sister, who had a more dramatic encounter, Diana described her first impression of Charles as less than enchanting.

In Tina Brown’s “The Diana Chronicles,” it is noted that Diana confided in friends about her aspirations to marry Charles one day, even going so far as to claim he was the only man who could never divorce her.

However, when she later recounted her thoughts to biographer Andrew Morton, she reflected on Charles with pity, noting, “What a sad man.”

Fast forward to 1981, during a commitment interview, Charles painted a different picture of their early interactions.

He recalled Diana as a lively and charming 16-year-old, full of fun and energy.

Yet, their next meeting wouldn’t occur until three years later, when they both attended a barbecue at the home of Philip de Passa in Sussex.

Diana later revealed in a tape recorded for a Channel 4 documentary that she was initially indifferent to the idea of seeing Charles again.

She mentioned that he had recently ended a relationship and was mourning the loss of his friend, Lord Mountbatten.

When the two reunited, however, Diana found herself pleasantly surprised by Charles.

She described him entering the room and feeling an unexpected attraction.

“I thought, all things considered, I’m very impressed this time around,” she admitted.

Their chemistry was palpable, as Diana noted that Charles seemed equally taken with her, showering her with affection throughout the evening.

Their conversation took a serious turn as they discussed the grief surrounding Lord Mountbatten’s death.

Diana expressed her sympathy, saying, “It’s pitiful to watch you walk up the aisle with Mountbatten’s coffin in front of you.” It was a moment of vulnerability that brought them closer, but it also highlighted the complexities of their budding relationship.

Diana recalled feeling overwhelmed when Charles began kissing her, describing his affectionate behavior as akin to a puppy following its owner.

Despite the initial spark, Diana faced challenges in navigating her relationship with a prince.

Charles’s inconsistent communication left her feeling uncertain.

After a week of daily calls, he suddenly went silent for three weeks, prompting Diana to question his intentions.

“Very odd,” she thought, “if he wants me, he knows where I am.”
